First we will take a look at the crab traps that are used by the hobbyist, crabbing can be a great day out at the beach for the whole family and can even continue into the evening with a fanatic meal from the catch of the day! There are many locations you can enjoy crabbing from like jetty’s, piers and even small boats if you have access to one. All you need for a great day out if the right crab trap, somecrab bait and you will be well on your way to catching sometasty crabs.

Let’s take a look at the types of crab traps you can use, theyrange from some very simple design to very complex and technical traps.

Ring Crab Traps: The ring crab trap is one of the simplest traps on the market, it is made up of two rings one being a slightly bit bigger than the other that are both connect to the net itself. To use this simple trap all you need to do is out some crab bait in the center of it and lower it down to the water bed where it will rest flat until crabs come and take the bait. Once a crab it standing on the trap taking/eating the bait you just to pull itup out of the water and that’s pretty much it! The bigger ofthe two rings will come up first which acts as a cage surrounding the crab prevent it from escaping, once at thesurface just remove the crab from the trap placing it in a bucket and you’re ready to go again and catch another. Ring crab traps are very popular with beginners as they are extremely cheap to buy, usually under $10 per trap and they pack and store away flat, the only downside to these traps is you have to make sure you check them every 10/15 minutes for crabs because if you leave them too long the crabs will eat the bait and leave as there is no surrounding walls or cage to keep them in.

Pyramid Crab Traps: As you can guess from its name this crab trap is in the shape if a pyramid only when being pulled to the surface, when resting on the waters bottom its look more like a star shape which is why some people often refer to it as a star crab trap. This trap is very similar to the ring crab trap, it can be packed and stored flat but again like the ring trap need to be checked regularly for crabs as it has no walls or cage to stop them from escaping. The benefits of this trap over the ring one is its build is slightly better and can be used in waters that have got stronger currents but for this added bonus you will have to pay a few dollars extra, they can usually be found for under $15 which is still a good deal.

Box Crab Traps: This is one of the best crab traps around for obvious reasons; it’s made from strong non-collapsible wire andis shaped like a medium to large cube. The main advantages of this crab trap is the once the crab enters searching for the bait it cannot escape, guaranteeing a catch which is the main aim of crabbing. Along with this comes the added bonus of nothaving to regularly check the trap every 10-15 minutes and allows you to relax and have a walk around without the fear of losing crab catches. The down side of this trap is storing and transporting it as it doesn’t collapse you will have to find somewhere to put it in its fully built state. These traps are regularly used by the more experienced crabber to maximise his catch and they have the option of being used from a boat with a crab trap floats attached to it, it can then be left to go and set another or just come in and you will never lose where it wasplaced. The price of these particular crab traps range dramatically from $15 to $100 it all does depend on the quality and complexity you want in your trap.

As you can see from the above reviews there is a great range of crab traps available to suit everyone’s needs.
